Milton Keynes is a new city, started in the 1970s. Adjacent to the M1 motorway; with its own inter-city station on the main line from London to the West Midlands, North West and Scotland; and close to London (Luton) Airport, it has excellent communications, and is host to many major national and international companies.
The city possesses excellent facilities, including one of the UK’s best shopping centres, an important regional theatre, John Dankworth’s and Cleo Lane’s renowned jazz theatre, the National Bowl, the national hockey stadium, and a major indoor real-snow ski slope.
There is both striking modern architecture, and some charming traditional environments, all of which are bound together by one of the most ambitious networks of parks, open spaces and landscaping ever created.
Close to the City are many tourist and leisure attractions, including the Grand Prix motor racing circuit at Silverstone; the Chiltern hills; important country houses and gardens such as Stowe, Woburn and Althorp; the rolling countryside of Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire; the factory outlet shopping centre at Bicester; the Shuttleworth historic aircraft collection; and Whipsnade zoo and Woburn safari park. The Grand Union Canal threads it way through the City, and major tourist destinations including Oxford, Cambridge and Stratford Upon Avon are only an hour or so’s drive away.
